3. Searches on the net

Coverage of the net was based on the Danish Web Index, which provided access to a very wide range of topics. To support the first phase of coverage of the Danish part of the net, an editorial database was established in Microsoft Access. This base was called DANBIBHP, and was divided into 2 sections: Homepages and Publications. Later on in the project this division was abandoned in favour of a clearer division into static and dynamic publications. The documents were entered under their titles with the option of stating personal author, topic, form, note about content and relevance, URL, dating and statement of "status", which was an evaluation of whether the publication concerned was a candidate for national bibliographic registration. About 60 homepages and about 40 publications were registered, forming the starting-point for work with the various publication types on the net. In addition, it was possible to form an impression of the indexing challenges ahead, without considering the MARC format and its demand for specific organisation at this stage.

DanBib test base Indoreg

At the end of 1996 a test database was set up in DanBib2 format, which is the DanBib format plus relevant fields from DanMARC2 allowing for the special needs of Internet publications.

Typical examples of publication types on the Internet are now stored here, catalogued and formated according to the principles applying to books, AV material and articles.

For documentation and support in this task a number of auxiliary tools have been set up:

  • File for documentation of indexing decisions
  • File for documentation of indexing problems
  • File for documentation of database problems
  • File for overview of new note fields or note formulations
  • File for overview of new terminology

The Indoreg base functions as the DanBib base, which will be given a Web interface during the autumn of 1997. It will then be possible to link from an Internet publication's URL to the actual publication itself.
